What happened?
The premiere was held at the Carthay Circle Theatre, with general release across the United States following on 4 February 1938. The production cost about 1.5 million dollars, an enormous sum for animation at the time and one the industry widely expected Disney to lose.
Significance
Why it matters
It was the first cel-animated feature film and the first animated feature produced in the United States, and it became the highest-grossing film of 1938. Adjusted for ticket-price inflation it is still the highest-grossing animated film ever made.
