Context
What happened?
NASA’s Apollo 11 mission carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module Eagle and walked on the surface, while Collins remained aboard the command module Columbia.
Significance
Why it matters
The landing fulfilled the central goal of the Apollo program and demonstrated that people could travel to another world, work there, and return safely. It remains one of the defining technological and exploratory achievements of the twentieth century.
