What happened?
Titanic was four days into her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York with more than 2,200 people aboard. The ship struck an iceberg late on 14 April and sank in the early hours of the following morning.
Significance
Why it matters
The disaster became one of history’s best-known peacetime maritime losses and exposed serious shortcomings in lifeboat provision and emergency practice. The response contributed to major changes in international maritime safety rules.
