Context
What happened?
A group of Roman senators attacked Caesar during a Senate meeting at the Curia of Pompey, part of the Theatre of Pompey complex. The leading conspirators included Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, and Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus.
Significance
Why it matters
The conspirators said they were defending the Republic from Caesar’s growing power, but the killing did not restore republican stability. It led to further civil wars and helped clear the way for Augustus and the Roman imperial system.
