Context
What happened?
The Rubicon marked a boundary between Caesar’s provincial command and Italy. By bringing the Thirteenth Legion across it, Caesar defied the rule that a general could not enter Italy at the head of an army and turned a political confrontation into open civil war.
Significance
Why it matters
The crossing set Caesar on the path to victory and dictatorship, while the conflict accelerated the collapse of the Roman Republic. “Crossing the Rubicon” consequently became an enduring phrase for taking an irreversible step.
